
Since early Monday, Claude Code users especially those on the $200-per-month Max plan have encountered sudden and steep restrictions. Although users receive a brief message stating “Claude usage limit reached” along with a reset time, many were left confused by the lack of any formal announcement or explanation. For developers who rely on Claude Code’s robust capabilities, the shift has disrupted projects without warning.
Complaints surfaced swiftly on GitHub. One frustrated user wrote, “There is no way in the 30 minutes of a few requests I have hit the 900 messages.” Others questioned whether their accounts were being mismanaged. These reactions reflect growing unease in the developer community, where such limits have serious implications for productivity. Despite these concerns, Anthropic has offered only a brief comment. “We’re aware that some Claude Code users are experiencing slower response times,” a representative said, without providing further details.
Some have tried other platforms, but with limited success. One user, who requested anonymity, told TechCrunch, “It just stopped the ability to make progress. I tried Gemini and Kimi, but there’s really nothing else that’s competitive with the capability set of Claude Code right now.”
No Clear Communication Fuels Uncertainty
Beyond the immediate impact, the opacity surrounding these changes has created widespread confusion. Users weren’t previously aware of strict usage limits largely due to Anthropic’s tiered pricing model. While the Max plan is said to offer 20 times more usage than Pro, and Pro five times more than the free plan, none of the tiers provide firm guarantees. For instance, free users are told their usage “will vary by demand,” leaving all plans subject to shifting conditions.
This ambiguity has made it nearly impossible for users to anticipate service interruptions. Although API and network issues have also been reported this week, the official status page still displays full uptime. Some developers interpret the lack of transparency as a way to quietly impose constraints without damaging the brand. As one user explained, “The lack of communication just causes people to lose confidence in them.”
Sustainability Questions Loom Over Max Plan
The Max plan’s appeal stems from its unmatched access. However, that access may no longer be sustainable. One user revealed he regularly makes over $1,000 worth of API calls in a single day using the $200 subscription. He acknowledged that some form of restriction was inevitable, but stressed the need for openness. “Just be transparent,” he said.
While usage limitations aren’t new in the world of AI services, the sudden nature of these changes without clear user guidance has eroded trust. Going forward, Anthropic may need to rethink its communication strategy if it hopes to maintain loyalty among its most dedicated users.
