What’s New about Nova Premier? Amazon’s Most Capable AI Model Yet

Amazon launches Nova Premier, its most powerful and advanced AI model.

Amazon has unveiled Nova Premier, its most advanced AI model yet in the Nova series. Built to handle text, images, and video (but not audio), Nova Premier is now available on Amazon Bedrock, the company’s AI development platform. According to Amazon, this model shines in tasks that require complex planning, deep contextual understanding, and precise execution. Although Premier doesn’t support audio processing, its multimodal capability makes it a strong contender in many AI domains.

Introduced originally in December during AWS re:Invent, the Nova family has rapidly grown. Amazon has since added models that handle image and video generation, audio understanding, and even task automation. Nova Premier builds on that momentum with an impressive 1 million-token context length roughly 750,000 words. This allows it to absorb and respond to much larger data sets than many competitors.

Performance and Pricing in a Competitive Market

While Nova Premier has notable strengths, it doesn’t dominate every benchmark. It trails behind Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro on coding tests like SWE-Bench Verified. Additionally, it performs less impressively on math and science benchmarks such as AIME 2025 and GPQA Diamond. However, the model excels at knowledge retrieval and visual comprehension. On internal tests like SimpleQA and MMMU, Premier scored very well, making it useful in areas requiring fast and accurate information recall.

In terms of cost, Premier is priced competitively. It charges $2.50 per million input tokens and $12.50 per million output tokens, aligning closely with Gemini 2.5 Pro’s structure. However, unlike reasoning-focused models such as OpenAI’s o4-mini or DeepSeek’s R1, Nova Premier does not take extra steps to validate or reason through its outputs.

Strategic Purpose and Amazon’s Bigger AI Vision

Rather than aiming for general-purpose reasoning, Amazon positions Premier as an ideal “teacher” model. Its strengths make it suitable for model distillation training smaller, faster models tailored to specific applications. This fits into Amazon’s larger AI strategy, where scalability and enterprise integration matter more than raw performance in all benchmarks.

CEO Andy Jassy has made it clear: AI is now central to Amazon’s growth. The company is currently developing over 1,000 generative AI tools. With triple-digit growth and a multi-billion-dollar annual run rate, Amazon is pushing hard to ensure models like Nova Premier lead the next wave of intelligent services.
