Amazon launches Kuiper Satellites, Challenges Starlink Dominance

Amazon Kuiper satellites launched into orbit to rival SpaceX’s Starlink network.

Amazon has officially entered the satellite internet arena with the launch of its first 27 Kuiper satellites. Departing from Florida’s Cape Canaveral Space Force Station atop a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket, this marks the start of a long-awaited deployment. Although the mission faced delays, including bad weather and logistical hurdles, it finally launched on April 28, 2025.

The Kuiper project aims to deploy a massive constellation of 3,236 satellites in low-Earth orbit. With a $10 billion investment, Amazon seeks to deliver broadband internet across the globe, particularly to rural and underserved areas. This initiative directly challenges SpaceX’s Starlink, which has already deployed over 8,000 satellites and services millions in 125 countries.

Despite launching two prototype satellites in 2023, Amazon remained quiet about the program until this year. Now, it has ambitious goals: the company must deploy at least 1,618 satellites by mid-2026 to meet U.S. Federal Communications Commission deadlines. Given the slow start, analysts believe Amazon may need an extension. Still, executives remain optimistic that service could begin later this year, starting with areas where 578 satellites can provide limited coverage.

Rivals in the Sky

Starlink has a major head start. Elon Musk’s SpaceX has consistently launched missions at a rapid pace, often weekly, using its reusable Falcon 9 rockets. As both a satellite and launch provider, SpaceX enjoys significant operational advantages. Its network not only provides consumer internet but also serves military and intelligence agencies.

Nonetheless, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos is undeterred. He believes the market is large enough for multiple winners. In a recent interview, he said, “There’s insatiable demand for internet.” Kuiper, he noted, will be primarily commercial but may also have defense applications. Amazon hopes its edge in cloud computing and consumer devices will help differentiate Kuiper. For instance, its consumer terminals  including one the size of a Kindle will cost under $400.

What Lies Ahead

Looking forward, Amazon expects up to five more Kuiper launches this year. In 2022, the company booked 83 launches from ULA, Arianespace, and Blue Origin, securing one of the largest launch deals in the space industry. Hours or days after launch, Amazon will confirm whether it has made contact with all satellites from its Redmond, Washington operations center.

Ultimately, this is a high-stakes move. Although Amazon is late to the game, its broad reach in tech, retail, and cloud services could allow Kuiper to carve out a significant share of the satellite internet market. With billions at stake and growing demand worldwide, the race to connect the globe from space has clearly just begun.
