Alibaba Launches Open-Source Qwen3.8-Max AI Model

Alibaba Qwen3.8-Max AI model launch

Alibaba has introduced Qwen3.8-Max, its latest flagship artificial intelligence model featuring 2.4 trillion parameters. The company says the model delivers performance comparable to leading systems from OpenAI and Anthropic across several advanced AI tasks. Following the announcement, Alibaba’s Hong Kong-listed shares rose sharply in early trading as investors responded positively to the launch.

The release also marks a return to Alibaba’s open-weight strategy. Unlike several recent flagship models that remained proprietary, Qwen3.8-Max will have its model weights available for public download next week. As a result, it becomes the first Max-class Qwen model to adopt an open-weight approach.

Qwen3.8-Max targets enterprise AI workloads

Qwen3.8-Max supports a context window of up to one million tokens while activating 95 billion parameters from its total 2.4 trillion-parameter mixture-of-experts architecture. In addition, the multimodal model processes text, images, video, lengthy documents, and live streams to build searchable knowledge bases.

Alibaba says the model can recreate software applications from screenshots, generate interactive games and educational animations, and convert two-dimensional floor plans into 3D visualizations. Moreover, the company designed Qwen3.8-Max for autonomous coding, complex research, and long-running AI agent workflows.

According to Alibaba’s published benchmark results, the model outperformed several leading competitors in coding, multimodal understanding, and engineering evaluations. However, it trailed some frontier models on selected benchmarks in general reasoning and software engineering. Industry observers also note that independent testing will provide a clearer picture of its real-world capabilities.

Chinese AI competition continues to intensify

The launch arrives as competition among Chinese AI companies accelerates. Earlier this year, Moonshot introduced Kimi K3, while DeepSeek continued expanding its reasoning models, prompting major AI developers to release increasingly capable systems. Consequently, Alibaba has accelerated investment in AI infrastructure and model development.

In May, Alibaba announced that it would exceed its previously planned investment of up to 380 billion yuan, or about $56 billion, for AI infrastructure over three years. Meanwhile, developers can access Qwen3.8-Max globally via Alibaba Cloud’s Model Studio APIs and the QwenWork workplace AI platform, providing enterprises with early access ahead of the open-weight release.
