Abu Dhabi is set to unveil Aion Sentia, the world’s first AI cognitive city, promising to transform urban life through cutting-edge artificial intelligence and cognitive technology. Scheduled for completion by 2027, this ambitious project aims to integrate AI across every aspect of daily living. Consequently, residents will experience smarter homes, automated public transport, and AI-enhanced healthcare services. Daniele Marinelli, CEO of My Aion Inc., the project’s Italian developer, emphasised that the city won’t simply be smart but cognitive constantly learning and adapting to its residents’ needs.
MAIA: The Heart of the AI City
At the core of Aion Sentia is MAIA, an AI-powered mobile application designed to serve as a single platform connecting users to all city services. Unlike typical apps, MAIA uses a Personal Profile Graph to understand users’ habits, preferences, and relationships in real time. For instance, it can recommend and book a restaurant for an anniversary without any user input. Furthermore, the app manages multiple sectors such as energy, mobility, healthcare, and education by providing personalised insights, like monitoring energy consumption and suggesting cost-saving measures. Thus, MAIA acts as an intelligent personal assistant, simplifying urban living.
Future Plans and Broader Impact
The project is a joint venture between Abu Dhabi’s Bold Technologies and My Aion Inc., backed by a $2.5 billion Build-Operate-Transfer model. Set to launch locally within 18 months, the initiative aims to expand globally to cities in Europe, the US, and beyond. The city’s advanced digital infrastructure and welcoming regulatory environment have made Abu Dhabi the perfect launchpad. Additionally, the partnership includes collaborations with UAE universities to support AI workforce training and innovation.
