The Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE) has introduced the Energy Efficiency Accelerators initiative to enhance energy and water performance across 100 industrial facilities. The program is part of the Abu Dhabi Energy and Water Efficiency Strategy 2030 and directly supports the UAE Net Zero 2050 Strategic Initiative.
The initiative provides specialized technical evaluations that identify opportunities to reduce operational costs and minimize environmental impact. Importantly, these assessments come at no financial burden to participating facilities. By optimizing energy and water use, companies will strengthen competitiveness while contributing to national climate goals.
Driving Industrial Sustainability
The Energy Efficiency Accelerators initiative is designed to empower Abu Dhabi’s industrial sector to adopt smarter consumption practices. Through this program, facilities receive a comprehensive analysis of consumption patterns, technical recommendations, and guidance to develop a roadmap for improvement. Additionally, the program ensures full confidentiality of all data collected during assessments.
Several high-consumption industries are a key focus. These include construction materials, food and beverages, metals, paper, rubber and plastics, and the chemical and pharmaceutical sectors. Together, they represent a significant share of energy and water usage in Abu Dhabi’s non-oil industrial landscape. For example, the metals sector alone accounts for over 51% of electricity consumption and 26% of water use annually.
Assessments and Future Goals
The program is structured into multiple stages. Facilities first undergo Level 1 on-site assessments, followed by more detailed Level 2 and Level 3 evaluations. These steps help identify inefficiencies and highlight opportunities for performance enhancement.
So far, assessments have been completed for 12 facilities, while work is in progress at more than 14 others. The DoE aims to complete evaluations for 50 facilities by the end of 2025 and finalize the remainder in 2026.
With global demand for emissions reduction and efficiency improvements rising, this initiative positions Abu Dhabi’s industries as leaders in sustainable practices. Ultimately, it offers both environmental and economic advantages, reinforcing the emirate’s role as a model for sustainability and competitiveness worldwide.
