In a major development for the logistics sector, Abu Dhabi has successfully tested its first autonomous drone parcel delivery. The pilot flight, conducted by aviation tech firm LODD in collaboration with investment group 7X and logistics provider EMX, demonstrated the feasibility of drone-based deliveries using a winch-based system. The test took place in Khalifa City, where a simulated package was delivered from a local post office to a designated drop zone.
This initiative is supported by the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO) and aligns with the broader vision of the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council (SASC). Additionally, the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) provided regulatory guidance. These efforts underline Abu Dhabi’s growing emphasis on smart mobility and localized advanced tech infrastructure.
Transitioning from traditional to smart delivery methods may seem challenging. However, the test has already illustrated how such innovation can enhance both efficiency and reliability in logistics.
Strong Public-Private Collaboration
The pilot flight serves as a testament to the cooperation between government and private sectors. Notably, ADIO’s Head of the SAVI Cluster, Omran Malek, emphasized that, “ADIO is proud to champion the development and rollout of cutting-edge logistics technologies that strengthen Abu Dhabi’s position as a global innovation hub. This pilot is a powerful example of the kind of local partnerships and forward-thinking strategies that drive long-term economic and infrastructure value for the Emirate.”
Meanwhile, Humaid Saber Al Hameli of the ITC reiterated the importance of maintaining safety alongside innovation. “Ensuring the safety and security of our airspace remains a top priority for the Integrated Transport Centre. We continue to advance the regulatory frameworks necessary to support the safe and effective integration of unmanned aerial systems into Abu Dhabi’s wider transport ecosystem. This pilot trial reflects the strength of collaboration between the public and private sectors, and represents a concrete step toward the future of smart aerial mobility in the emirate,” he said.
Such synergy between sectors is essential. By working together, stakeholders can ensure new technologies are implemented responsibly and effectively.
Vision for Scalable Urban Delivery
Looking forward, the pilot represents just the first phase of a broader plan. The project aims to expand drone delivery networks across the Emirate. With scalable systems and operator-managed fleets, urban logistics could soon become more responsive and efficient.
Rashid Al Manai, CEO of LODD, remarked that, “Autonomous drones introduce a transformative layer to urban delivery networks. With one operator able to manage multiple deliveries simultaneously, the system brings a new level of scalability and responsiveness to the logistics chain. We’re proud to work with 7X, ADIO, the GCAA, and the Integrated Transport Centre to advance this technology in the UAE.”
Echoing that sentiment, 7X Group CEO Tariq Al Wahedi stated, “This milestone reflects our continued commitment to pioneering next-generation logistics solutions that align with the UAE’s vision for smart mobility. By integrating autonomous aerial technology into EMX’s national logistics ecosystem, we are enhancing operational reach and speed, and building a more adaptive, future-ready network capable of meeting the evolving demands of commerce and connectivity.”
As the city refines operational standards and strengthens infrastructure, Abu Dhabi is paving the way to become a regional hub for autonomous aerial mobility. The successful test is not just a milestone, it’s a sign of what’s next.
