SpaceX Secures $40 Billion Apollo Deal to Finance AI Chip Expansion

SpaceX Starship rocket launches from Starbase

SpaceX has announced a financing agreement worth approximately $40 billion with an affiliate of Apollo Global Management. The deal will support the purchase of artificial intelligence chips and server hardware, which SpaceX will lease to expand its computing infrastructure.

According to a regulatory filing, each equipment lease will run for slightly more than five years from the delivery date. Consequently, the arrangement will allow SpaceX to access substantial computing resources while spreading payments over an extended period.

SpaceX Expands AI Infrastructure Through Leasing

The agreement highlights SpaceX’s growing investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure. As demand for advanced computing continues to rise, the company aims to strengthen its AI capabilities while supporting its broader ambitions in space exploration.

Moreover, the financing structure will help SpaceX acquire essential hardware without purchasing the equipment outright.

The company expects to finalise the agreement before the end of 2026. Meanwhile, equipment deliveries should begin in the first half of 2027, triggering the associated lease arrangements.

The investment also reflects the increasing importance of high-performance processors in developing sophisticated AI systems.

Musk Confirms Major GPU Financing

On Sunday, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced on X that the company had “closed” $40 billion in debt financing for graphics processing units.

Furthermore, Musk explained that the funding primarily covered chips scheduled for delivery during the first and second quarters. He added that the financing would not be “a major factor this quarter.”

The announcement provides further insight into SpaceX’s strategy for securing the computing capacity needed for its AI operations.

Meanwhile, Chief Financial Officer Bret Johnsen previously indicated that SpaceX expects fourth-quarter capital expenditure of between $35 billion and $40 billion.

These projections underline the company’s substantial infrastructure requirements as it expands its technology investments.

Nvidia Chips Support Long-Term AI Ambitions

Earlier discussions with banks and asset managers focused on raising approximately $40 billion to purchase Nvidia processors.

These advanced chips play a central role in training and operating demanding artificial intelligence systems. Therefore, securing sufficient hardware capacity remains essential for companies pursuing large-scale AI development.

Additionally, the Apollo agreement demonstrates how alternative financing structures can support expensive technology investments.

By leasing equipment rather than relying entirely on direct purchases, SpaceX can distribute costs across several years.

Ultimately, the financing arrangement represents another significant step in SpaceX’s expanding AI infrastructure strategy. The investment also connects its growing computing ambitions with its long-term Moon and Mars exploration goals.
