Toyota Motor Corp. plans to introduce 400,000 humanoid robots across its manufacturing operations. Moreover, the large-scale deployment will extend beyond Toyota’s own factories to facilities operated by parts suppliers.
Toyota plans major humanoid robot deployment
Toyota plans to use 150,000 humanoid robots at its own manufacturing facilities. Meanwhile, the remaining 250,000 units will operate at factories run by the automaker’s parts suppliers.
Therefore, supplier facilities will receive more robots than Toyota’s own plants under the proposed deployment. However, the company has not disclosed when it plans to introduce all 400,000 units.

Robots will use wheels instead of legs
The humanoid robots will feature two-fingered hands designed to perform tasks in manufacturing environments. However, they will move on wheels rather than using legs for walking.
Each robot will weigh about 50 kilograms. Consequently, Toyota’s planned machines will differ from humanoid robots that rely on two-legged movement.
The wheeled design could also support movement across suitable factory floors. Meanwhile, the two-fingered hands will provide the robots with a way to interact with equipment and materials.
Deployment timeline remains unclear
Toyota has outlined how it plans to distribute the 400,000 robots between its factories and supplier facilities. Nevertheless, the company has not provided a specific deployment schedule.
