Dubai Municipality has deployed a smart robot for geospatial surveying, adding autonomous technology to the emirate’s urban planning and infrastructure operations. The system uses LiDAR and smart cameras to collect spatial data with limited human intervention.
The robot can continuously collect precise coordinates, panoramic imagery, video and three-dimensional point clouds. As a result, Dubai Municipality can update spatial databases while generating detailed information for infrastructure development, asset management and urban planning.
The deployment also produced measurable results at the Wadi Al Amardi Housing Project for UAE nationals. There, the technology reduced cumulative customer waiting time by 472 days and cut operating costs by 90%.
Robot Strengthens Geospatial Data Collection
The smart surveying robot combines LiDAR with advanced cameras to capture detailed information from surveyed locations. The system can also produce highly accurate 3D point clouds and panoramic imagery.
The technology expands survey outputs beyond conventional two-dimensional records. As a result, survey teams can create more detailed digital representations of buildings, including their façades.
At Wadi Al Amardi, the robot supported final surveys of completed homes. It also helped with issuing final survey certificates for the housing project.
The deployment generated savings equivalent to 24 days of fieldwork and 40 hours of office work. As a result, the system improved both field productivity and administrative efficiency.
3D Mapping Supports Dubai Urban Planning
The robot also improves safety by reducing the need for survey teams to enter difficult-to-access locations. At the same time, it can increase surveying productivity and improve data quality.
Accurate geospatial information supports several municipal functions. These include infrastructure development, asset management, urban planning and government decision-making. Reusable 3D datasets can also support future engineering and planning projects.
Dubai Municipality already uses several technologies for geospatial data collection. Its GIS projects include drones and a geospatial vehicle equipped with laser scanners, GPS positioning systems and 360-degree cameras.
The municipality has also previously showcased robotic surveying technology. At GITEX Global 2024, it presented a Robot Scanner designed to collect and analyse geospatial data from government assets and infrastructure networks.
Consequently, the latest deployment builds on Dubai’s broader use of robotics, GIS and 3D mapping. These technologies support the emirate’s digital twin and broader smart-city infrastructure.
Municipality Plans Wider Robot Deployment
The planned expansion could give Dubai Municipality a larger automated surveying capability across residential developments. Broader deployment could also reduce repetitive fieldwork while improving the availability of updated spatial information.
For Dubai and the wider UAE, the initiative demonstrates how robotics can support practical government operations. Rather than limiting automation to experimental projects, the municipality is applying it directly to surveying, infrastructure planning and public services.
The deployment therefore adds another layer to Dubai’s smart-city strategy. With LiDAR, cameras, and 3D mapping working together, the municipality can collect richer spatial data while reducing costs, wait times, and exposure to difficult field conditions.
