ChatGPT Tests Writing Style Feature With Connected Apps
ChatGPT is testing a new Writing Style feature that could make its responses sound more like individual users. Instead of repeatedly explaining tone preferences, users may eventually let the chatbot learn from writing stored in connected apps.
However, the feature currently appears limited to a small group of users. During onboarding, the feature explains, “ChatGPT will write in your voice by referencing examples from your connected apps.”
How the Writing Style Feature Works
The system allows users to provide writing examples from three broad categories: Messaging, Documents, and Email.
For messaging, Slack can provide examples. Meanwhile, Google Drive and Notion can supply document-based writing, while Gmail can provide email examples.
Once users configure the feature, ChatGPT could examine how they naturally communicate across these services. Therefore, users may not need to paste writing samples into every conversation.
Moreover, the approach could help the system recognise that one person may communicate differently depending on context. For example, an email may use a professional tone, while a message to colleagues may sound shorter and more conversational. Consequently, the feature could provide more context-aware writing assistance.
Connected Writing Could Offer Deeper Personalisation
Similar writing-personalisation tools already exist. Anthropic previously introduced Styles, which allows users to upload or paste writing samples. The system can then create a custom style based on those communication patterns.
However, the experiment described here takes a different route. Instead of relying mainly on writing samples supplied manually, ChatGPT can reference existing writing inside connected services.
As a result, the system could potentially work with a much broader collection of real-world examples. Furthermore, those examples may reveal how a user changes tone between emails, messages, and longer documents.
Still, the feature remains in testing. Although the experiment has been confirmed, there is currently no confirmed date for a wider rollout. Therefore, most users may need to wait before they can access Writing Style through their connected apps.
