Stripe has reportedly finalized a deal to acquire AI gateway startup OpenRouter for more than $7 billion, according to Bloomberg. The reported transaction would mark one of Stripe’s largest moves into AI infrastructure.
However, Stripe has not publicly confirmed the acquisition. A Stripe spokesperson told TechCrunch that the company does not comment on rumors or speculation.
OpenRouter Connects Developers With AI Models
OpenRouter provides a unified gateway that lets developers access hundreds of AI models through one interface. Therefore, users can select models based on factors such as performance, cost and specific application requirements.
The platform supports more than 400 AI models and has reported millions of users. Moreover, its routing system can direct requests between different providers, giving developers more flexibility when building AI applications.
OpenRouter also handles model routing and provider selection. As a result, developers can avoid creating separate integrations for every AI model provider.
The company has also built tools around billing, usage tracking and model availability. In January, Stripe said OpenRouter had more than five million developers using its platform.
Deal Marks Major AI Infrastructure Push
The reported acquisition would come only months after OpenRouter raised $113 million in a Series B funding round. That financing valued the startup at roughly $1.3 billion, according to reports.
Consequently, a deal above $7 billion would represent a sharp increase from OpenRouter’s latest reported valuation. The transaction would also highlight the growing value of infrastructure that connects businesses with multiple AI providers.
Stripe already has a close commercial relationship with OpenRouter. In January, Stripe announced that OpenRouter uses Stripe Invoicing, Stripe Tax and Radar to support billing, global expansion and fraud protection.
Furthermore, Stripe and OpenRouter expanded their relationship through Stripe Projects in April. The integration allows developers to provision OpenRouter accounts, generate API keys and manage AI access through Stripe’s developer tooling.
The reported acquisition could therefore extend an existing infrastructure relationship into full corporate ownership. At the same time, it would give Stripe a stronger position in the rapidly developing AI application stack.
Stripe Expands Beyond Payments
Stripe has increasingly positioned itself as infrastructure for companies building and monetizing AI products. The company has described its strategy as building the economic infrastructure for AI.
OpenRouter could strengthen that strategy by giving Stripe direct access to an AI model gateway used by developers and enterprises. In turn, Stripe could connect model access, billing and payments through a broader developer ecosystem.
However, the acquisition could also raise questions about OpenRouter’s neutrality. The platform’s appeal comes partly from giving customers access to models from competing providers through one service.
If the reported deal closes, Stripe will need to maintain that flexibility while integrating OpenRouter into its wider business. Meanwhile, the transaction would underline how quickly AI infrastructure companies are attracting multibillion-dollar valuations.
For now, the reported price remains subject to change, and Stripe has not formally announced the acquisition.
