Samsung SDS has entered discussions with Dunamu, the operator of South Korea’s largest cryptocurrency exchange Upbit, to develop stablecoin infrastructure, AI-powered payment models, and digital asset systems. The announcement came during Samsung SDS’ second-quarter earnings call, where CEO Lee Jun-hee outlined the company’s strategy to expand into digital financial infrastructure. Consequently, Samsung is strengthening its presence in blockchain and digital payments as South Korea advances its crypto regulatory framework.

The collaboration follows a strategic investment completed in May, when Samsung SDS, Samsung Securities, and Samsung Card acquired a combined 4% stake in Dunamu. Moreover, Samsung SDS described the investment as a long-term strategic move rather than a purely financial holding. By combining Samsung SDS’ cloud, IT, and cybersecurity expertise with Dunamu’s blockchain capabilities, the companies aim to develop next-generation financial infrastructure.

Partnership Targets Digital Finance Infrastructure

Samsung SDS said it is exploring cooperation across the full stablecoin lifecycle, including issuance, settlement, and digital asset management. Therefore, the partnership extends beyond cryptocurrency trading into enterprise-grade payment and financial infrastructure.

The company also highlighted its experience with the Korea Securities Depository’s tokenized securities platform and its successful end-to-end validation of stablecoin issuance and settlement processes. As a result, Samsung SDS believes it has established differentiated capabilities that can support regulated digital finance services.

In addition, both companies plan to evaluate AI-based payment systems that could automate financial transactions, strengthen fraud detection, and improve operational efficiency. These technologies could support banks, financial institutions, and enterprise customers as digital asset adoption expands across South Korea.

AI and Cloud Growth Support Expansion

The digital finance initiative comes as Samsung SDS continues to expand its AI and cloud businesses. During the second quarter, the company reported revenue of 3.72 trillion won, up 5.9% year over year. Furthermore, cloud revenue increased 17%, while external cloud business revenue surged 75%, driven by demand for Samsung Cloud Platform and GPU-as-a-service offerings.

Samsung SDS also outlined plans to significantly expand its AI infrastructure capacity over the next several years. Consequently, the company is positioning itself to support both enterprise AI workloads and digital financial services through scalable cloud infrastructure.

Supporting South Korea’s Digital Asset Strategy

The partnership aligns with South Korea’s broader efforts to establish a regulated framework for stablecoins and digital assets. Therefore, Samsung SDS and Dunamu are preparing infrastructure that can support compliant payment systems once regulatory guidelines become fully operational.

Samsung Electronics recently announced plans to add stablecoin support to Samsung Wallet, while Samsung SDS is developing the enterprise infrastructure behind digital asset services. Together, these initiatives indicate a coordinated strategy across Samsung companies to strengthen the group’s position in digital finance, blockchain, and AI-powered payment technologies.
