Sony Partners With Top Universities to Advance Next-Generation aibo

Sony has announced a research partnership with the University of Tokyo and the University of California, Berkeley to advance the next generation of its aibo entertainment robot. As part of the collaboration, the company will provide research-use prototype aibo models and development tools to laboratories at both universities.

Additionally, Sony will showcase the research prototype at SIGGRAPH 2026, the international conference on computer graphics and interactive technologies, taking place in Los Angeles from July 21 to 23.

Academic Research Drives aibo’s Next Phase

The collaboration marks a strategic shift toward academic research as Sony explores new capabilities for its robotic companion. Furthermore, the initiative follows the company’s recent decision to discontinue sales of the current ERS-1000 aibo model in Japan after existing inventory sells out.

However, Sony will continue offering technical support, replacement parts, and cloud services for current owners. Meanwhile, the robot remains available in the United States, where it sells for more than $3,000.

Expanding AI and Robotics Innovation

The partnership also aligns with Sony’s broader investment in artificial intelligence and robotics. Earlier this year, Sony AI unveiled Project Ace, an autonomous robot that achieved competitive performance against elite human table tennis players. In addition, the company recently established a human resource development fund with the University of Tokyo to support future AI research.

By working closely with leading universities, Sony aims to accelerate innovation for future aibo models. Consequently, academic research could play a key role in shaping the robot’s next generation while strengthening the company’s long-term robotics strategy.

Researchers will begin using prototype aibo robots to explore new AI and robotics technologies. As these projects progress, the findings could influence future consumer versions and expand aibo’s capabilities beyond entertainment.
