Microsoft has introduced MAI-Image-2-Efficient, a streamlined version of its text-to-image model focused on reducing production costs. As a result, the model costs $19.50 per million image output tokens, compared with $33 for the full MAI-Image-2. In addition, it runs 22 percent faster and uses four times fewer compute resources. Therefore, it targets workflows that demand high volume and efficiency rather than maximum visual precision.

At the same time, the model suits applications such as social media ads, product thumbnails, and batch marketing assets. These use cases prioritize speed and scalability over fine detail. Meanwhile, MAI-Image-2 remains better suited for high-fidelity outputs like cinematic visuals and polished creative work. Both models retain strong photorealism and in-image text capabilities, which support a wide range of design tasks.

Pricing, Access, and Performance Gains

Developers can access MAI-Image-2-Efficient through Microsoft Foundry and the MAI Playground. Text input pricing remains consistent at $5 per million tokens, aligning with the flagship model. Moreover, the new variant delivers roughly 40 percent faster performance than several competing image models.

Microsoft also plans to expand availability across its ecosystem. The model will integrate into platforms such as Copilot and Bing, although a timeline has not been specified. Consequently, the rollout will extend its reach across both developer and consumer environments.

Expanding Microsoft’s In-House AI Stack

The release reflects Microsoft’s broader shift toward building an internal AI model ecosystem. Over recent months, the company has introduced multiple models across image, voice, and transcription capabilities. As this portfolio grows, Microsoft reduces reliance on external partners and strengthens control over pricing and performance.

Furthermore, this approach aligns with the rising demand for cost-efficient AI tools across enterprises. By offering scalable and optimized models, Microsoft positions itself to compete across both premium and high-volume AI workloads.
