Meta Unveils Ray-Ban Smart Glasses Designed for Prescription Wearers

Meta Platforms and EssilorLuxottica have introduced two new Ray-Ban smart glasses designed specifically for prescription users. Notably, the Ray-Ban Meta Blayzer Optics and Ray-Ban Meta Scriber Optics mark the first models built around corrective vision from the start.

These glasses are available for pre-order in the United States at $499. Meanwhile, retail sales will begin on April 14 across optical stores and selected global markets. As a result, the launch expands smart eyewear beyond tech enthusiasts into everyday consumers.

Additionally, this move reflects a broader strategy shift. Instead of positioning smart glasses as niche gadgets, the company is integrating them into traditional eyewear channels. Therefore, it targets a much larger audience that already depends on prescription lenses.

Familiar Features, Broader Reach

The new models maintain similar core features to earlier versions. For instance, they include a camera, microphone, speakers, and AI integration. However, they do not feature a built-in display, which places them below premium offerings in the lineup.

Furthermore, the glasses come in both rectangular and rounded styles, making them suitable for everyday wear. They will also be distributed mainly through established optical retail channels. Consequently, this approach focuses more on accessibility than hardware innovation.

Mark Zuckerberg said in January that “billions of people wear glasses or contacts for vision correction,” signaling the company’s ambitions for the category.

Rising Demand and Competitive Pressure

At the same time, demand for smart glasses continues to grow. Production plans have expanded significantly, reflecting strong consumer interest. In fact, manufacturing capacity could reach tens of millions of units annually in the coming years.

However, competition is also intensifying. Google plans to launch its own AI-powered glasses in partnership with Warby Parker. As a result, the race to dominate the smart eyewear market is accelerating.

By embedding AI into prescription eyewear sold through major retail networks like LensCrafters and Ray-Ban stores, the company aims to secure a strong market position early. Therefore, controlling distribution channels may prove just as important as advancing technology.
