Musk’s X Plans to Open Source New Algorithm Within Seven Days

The social media platform X will open its new algorithm to the public in seven days. Specifically, the release will include all code used for organic and advertising post recommendations. As a result, developers and users will gain direct visibility into how content is ranked and promoted.

The algorithm disclosure will not be a one-time event. Instead, updates are expected to occur on a regular basis, along with detailed developer notes explaining changes over time. Therefore, the initiative aims to provide ongoing transparency rather than a single release.

Regulatory pressure in Europe

Meanwhile, regulatory scrutiny in Europe has continued to intensify. Earlier this week, the European Commission extended a retention order issued last year. Consequently, requirements related to algorithms and the spread of illegal content will now remain in effect until the end of 2026.

In addition, legal challenges have emerged at the national level. In July 2025, Paris prosecutors launched an investigation into suspected algorithmic bias and fraudulent data extraction. As a result, regulatory oversight of platform operations has increased across multiple jurisdictions.

Fines and ongoing disputes

More recently, European regulators imposed a 120 million euro ($140 million) fine on the platform. According to regulators, transparency obligations under the Digital Services Act were breached. Specifically, the fine relates to the “blue checkmark” subscription model, limited transparency in the ad repository, and restricted access for researchers to public data.

Following the fine, tensions between the platform and European regulators have continued. However, the planned algorithm release is still expected to proceed as scheduled despite ongoing disputes.
