Google Confirms Gemini-Powered AI Glasses Launching in 2026

Google is developing two categories of AI-powered smart glasses to compete with other models entering the market next year. One version will include integrated displays, while the other will focus on audio-based interactions. The first pair is expected in 2026, and the company is working with multiple hardware partners to shape the final designs.

The company also detailed software upgrades coming to a mixed-reality headset. These enhancements include a travel mode that will allow the device to remain stable in moving vehicles. Additionally, a new PC Connect app will let any Windows computer mirror its display inside the headset and support gaming, which should broaden overall appeal. This change removes earlier limitations and encourages wider use across different platforms.

Competition across AI and AR wearables continues to intensify, and several companies are preparing new devices aimed at blending convenience with advanced computing. As the category grows, consumers are seeking glasses that feel natural to wear while providing meaningful digital functionality.

Prototype Testing and Early Development

During a recent demonstration, several prototype versions of AI glasses were available for hands-on testing. One prototype, developed with Xreal and known as Project Aura, provided a clearer glimpse into how slim XR hardware may evolve. Most of the prototypes connect wirelessly to a smartphone, enabling them to stay lightweight while still supporting demanding applications. Because the phone handles major processing tasks, the glasses can maintain a form factor close to traditional eyewear.

Two display-equipped prototypes showcased different approaches: one used a single monocular screen, while the other offered binocular displays for both eyes. Both versions supported augmented overlays for navigation and communication apps, though the binocular model delivered a broader virtual workspace.

The company aims to design software experiences that function smoothly across display and audio modes. In testing, real-time translation appeared as on-lens captions but could also be delivered via audio alone. This flexibility allows users to choose how they prefer to interact with information.

Display features also expanded mapping capabilities. A top-down view of the user’s location, complete with orientation indicators, became accessible with a simple downward glance. When capturing photos and generating enhanced versions through a compact AI model, users could preview results immediately within the glasses rather than returning to their phone.

Project Aura operates as a standalone device using Android XR, although it requires a continuous connection to an external battery pack. It offers a 70-degree field of view, which is wider than earlier eyewear produced by the same hardware partner. The interface feels familiar due to hand-tracking controls similar to those found in other XR devices, although with fewer onboard cameras.

Expanded Features for the XR Ecosystem

New updates for the XR headset are arriving in response to early user feedback. A travel mode will stabilize virtual windows while in motion, making it easier to watch videos or work during flights or car rides. Previously, rapid window movement made the experience challenging in moving environments.

The new PC Connect app, launching in beta, will allow any Windows computer to link with the headset for virtual screen mirroring. This also supports gaming, which could significantly broaden interest among new users. A macOS version is under development to enhance cross-platform compatibility.

A new avatar system called “Likeness” is also rolling out. It generates highly realistic digital representations using a quick facial scan through a smartphone. These avatars mimic facial expressions and hand gestures, offering a more natural presence in virtual meetings. This feature, like the PC Connect app, is launching in beta and will begin rolling out this week.

Together, these updates reinforce the company’s push toward a versatile XR ecosystem designed for everyday use while still supporting advanced mixed-reality experiences.
