X Launches Chat, a Major Upgrade to Encrypted Messaging

Chat app encrypted messaging screen

X has introduced Chat, a fully encrypted upgrade to its direct messaging service, and it brings a broad range of new capabilities. The platform now includes support for end-to-end encryption, video calls, voice calls, file sharing, and disappearing messages. Additionally, the company announced that Chat is available on iOS and the web, while the Android version will arrive soon. It replaces the older messaging system, and your previous conversations should transfer over without interruption.

Furthermore, X says that Chat offers end-to-end encryption for messages and files, although metadata including who received a message and when it was sent is not covered. A support note adds that there is no protection against man-in-the-middle attacks. The company also admits that if “a malicious insider or X itself” compromised an encrypted conversation, there would be no way for users to detect it, though verification options for message authenticity and device identity are planned.

More Privacy Controls and Flexible Messaging

Other privacy enhancements include disappearing messages that automatically delete after a selected time, giving users greater control over their conversations. Moreover, users can receive alerts when someone takes a screenshot or choose to block screenshots entirely. Messages can be edited or deleted, and Chat already supports voice and video calls. Voice notes will also be added in the future, making the tool even more versatile.

In addition to these upgrades, Chat integrates the features introduced in previous encrypted DM experiments. X  then Twitter first launched encrypted DMs in 2023, but the feature was paused earlier this year while improvements were underway. Now, those improvements appear to have evolved into the full Chat experience.

A Step Toward Stronger Secure Communication

With Chat’s arrival, X continues moving toward a more secure communication ecosystem. The combination of encryption, privacy tools, and flexible messaging options creates a more robust environment for users. Consequently, the update supports a broader push toward safer digital communication while offering modern features that align with evolving expectations.
