A new Threads feature called “ghost posts” lets users share updates that vanish automatically after 24 hours. The posts are designed to encourage spontaneous sharing and boost overall engagement on the app. This approach mirrors the popular disappearing content trend seen across social platforms.
The feature expands posting options for users, allowing them to express themselves more freely without worrying about long-term visibility. Moreover, it introduces a lighter, more casual way to connect, which may help the platform maintain a sense of freshness and activity.
More Privacy and Less Pressure
Replies to ghost posts are sent directly to the user’s inbox, meaning others cannot see who has interacted or liked the content. This design helps promote genuine conversations in a private and low-pressure setting.
“You can share unfiltered thoughts and fresh takes without the pressure of permanence or polish,” Meta said.
Users can easily enable the feature by tapping the ghost icon in the post creation menu. Once published, these posts appear as grayed-out dotted chat bubbles in the feed, making them easy to distinguish from standard posts. Additionally, the feature’s limited lifespan may help reduce clutter on user timelines and highlight more recent discussions.
Keeping Threads Dynamic and Engaging
Threads, launched in 2023 as a competitor to X, continues to evolve as it grows its audience. As of August, it had 400 million active users worldwide. With ghost posts, the platform aims to sustain momentum by offering a quick, low-commitment way to share updates.
Ultimately, this addition may help strengthen Threads’ identity as a space for authentic, in-the-moment interaction. By combining creativity and privacy, the app seeks to attract more users who prefer simplicity over permanence in online conversations.
