Google has rolled out a new experimental Windows app called the Google app for Windows. It enables users to search the web quickly, locate files stored on internal storage, browse Google Drive, and find installed apps. The app is part of Search Labs and aims to streamline workflow while boosting productivity.
The installation process resembles Chrome and requires a personal Google account to sign in. Once installed, it places a draggable and resizable search bar on the desktop, offering flexibility. Users can also minimize it instantly with the Alt+Space shortcut.
Key Features and Search Options
The app functions much like macOS Spotlight, offering quick access to files and online results. Additionally, it features a dedicated dark mode for those who prefer working at night. Users can switch between AI mode, images, shopping, videos, and other result categories for a tailored experience.
Transitioning between modes is simple, and detailed responses can be obtained through AI Mode. The configuration menu enables users to modify shortcuts or disable AI Mode, ensuring they have control over their search preferences.
Google Lens Integration and Availability
The app also integrates Google Lens, allowing users to capture and search screen content, translate text, or get help with math problems. Furthermore, this integration extends the app’s usefulness beyond simple file and web searches.
Currently, the app is available only in English for users in the United States. To run it, a PC with Windows 10 or Windows 11 is required.
