Nano Banana Brings 10M New Users and 200M Edits to Gemini App

Nano Banana image editing interface

Following last week’s reveal, the image editing tool known as Nano Banana has quickly gained massive traction. Officially named Gemini 2.5 Flash Image, the codename stuck from testing and is now embraced across platforms. A banana emoji even appears in the Gemini prompt bar, while AI Studio and a dedicated @NanoBanana social account also highlight it. On LMArena’s Image Edit leaderboard, Nano Banana holds the top spot with a commanding 171-point lead.

The model stands out for its ability to preserve character likeness and consistency. In addition, users can upload multiple photos, apply style transfers, and engage in multi-turn editing. These features enhance creative workflows and encourage experimentation.

Growth Driven by New Users

Josh Woodward revealed that more than 200 million images have been edited since last Tuesday’s launch. Just as striking, over 10 million of those editing with Nano Banana are first-time Gemini app users. Because of this momentum, downloads have surged. Gemini now ranks #2 in the Productivity category of the App Store. Meanwhile, on Google Play it sits at #13 among the top free apps.

This rapid adoption shows how native image editing can fuel broader engagement. Furthermore, the buzz surrounding Nano Banana has transformed it into a cultural marker within the app’s community.

Expanding Model Capabilities

Alongside Nano Banana, another update is rolling out in Google Photos. Veo 3, designed for photo-to-video generation, offers higher-quality clips than its predecessor. Since the initial release of Veo 2 in July, user interest has remained steady. Now, with Veo 3 available to all, subscribers benefit from increased generation capacity.
