Grok Imagine, xAI’s latest multimodal AI tool, is now available globally at no cost. Last week, xAI Founder Elon Musk announced that, for a limited time, all users can access the AI image and video generating tool, whether they have a paid subscription or not. Notably, the tool supports both text-to-image and image-to-video features. Moreover, Grok Imagine is known for its speed, making it one of the fastest AI video tools available today.
Initially, Grok Imagine was a premium feature limited to SuperGrok and Premium+ X subscribers via iOS. Soon after, xAI added Android support. Now, the tool is completely free and accessible to all users worldwide. Users can upload an image or use an AI-generated image from Grok. Importantly, the video generation feature produces videos up to 15 seconds long with native audio.
Safety Concerns Surrounding Grok Imagine
Despite its appeal, Grok Imagine raises several safety concerns. First, the tool’s “Spicy” mode previously allowed users to create explicit content. Many netizens shared mature-themed videos, which caused worry. However, the free version currently does not include Custom, Normal, Fun, or Spicy generation modes.
Another concern involves generating videos of public figures and celebrities. Our testing revealed that Grok Imagine can animate images of global and Indian celebrities. While international figures were rendered with higher accuracy, even Indian celebrities were represented fairly well. This capability introduces risks around deepfakes. Leading AI video generators, such as Google’s Veo 3, OpenAI’s Sora, Runway, and Pika, explicitly forbid creating content featuring real-life people. Additionally, Grok can animate copyrighted characters, further complicating ethical use.
Finally, Grok Imagine allows users to upload images for animation. For example, we converted a Gadgets 360 staff member’s image into a short video within seconds. The free version does not support adding prompts to videos, although the paid version does.
