In a strategic move to modernize its government, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum announced significant cabinet changes. The reshuffle includes the creation of a new Ministry of Foreign Trade and a plan to integrate artificial intelligence across all federal institutions. These decisions were made after consultations with UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and received his approval.
As Sheikh Mohammed stated on his official X account, “Brothers and sisters, after consulting with my brother, the President of the State, may God protect him, and after his approval, we announce today some changes in the UAE government as follows: The Ministry of Foreign Trade was established in the UAE government, Dr. Thani Al Zeyoudi was appointed Minister of Foreign Trade, and the name of the Ministry of Economy was changed to the Ministry of Economy and Tourism, headed by Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri.”
Trade and Tourism Now Share Strategic Focus
With this announcement, the UAE aims to boost global trade influence and sharpen its economic edge. The new Ministry of Foreign Trade will focus on building international partnerships while strengthening national competitiveness. Dr. Thani Al Zeyoudi, who previously served in a similar role, now leads the ministry in its standalone form.
Simultaneously, the Ministry of Economy has been renamed the Ministry of Economy and Tourism. This change aligns with the growing impact of tourism on the national economy. By integrating economic and tourism strategies, the UAE hopes to create more cohesive policy planning. Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri will continue leading the newly titled ministry.
AI Becomes Key to Federal Decision-Making
Possibly the most forward-looking shift is the UAE’s adoption of artificial intelligence within federal governance. Starting in January 2026, the National Artificial Intelligence System will join the Cabinet, the Ministerial Development Council, and all federal boards as an advisory member. This AI initiative is expected to streamline decision-making, offer real-time analysis, and improve the implementation of national strategies.
Sheikh Mohammed emphasized, “The world is going through a comprehensive restructuring phase… scientifically, economically, and socially… and our goal is to prepare today for the coming decades… Our goal is to ensure continued prosperity and a decent life for future generations.”
These reforms clearly signal the UAE’s intent to lead through innovation, resilience, and strategic foresight. By combining modern governance with technology, the country positions itself for long-term global leadership.
