Meta and Oakley Tease Smart Glasses Launch June 20

Mark Zuckerberg and Oakley logos hint at new smart glasses launch.

Meta is teaming up with Oakley to introduce a new line of smart glasses, with an official reveal set for June 20. This partnership was hinted at in a teaser video posted by Meta’s CTO Andrew Bosworth, showing both companies’ logos but no product images. Oakley confirmed the launch on Instagram, saying, “The next evolution is coming on June 20.” Additionally, a joint Instagram page “Oakley | Meta” has shared the teaser across social channels, with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg reposting it to build excitement.

The glasses will likely use Oakley’s Sphaera frame and incorporate advanced audio, camera, and AI features. This suggests Meta’s continued push into next-generation wearable technology, building on the success of the Ray-Ban Meta collaboration. The teaser’s closing frame shows Oakley and Meta logos side by side, hinting at a design language similar to the Ray-Ban Meta glasses.

Building on the Ray-Ban Legacy

Meta first entered the smart glasses market in 2021 with Ray-Ban Stories, which featured speakers and a camera but no augmented reality. The 2023 second-generation model improved the camera, audio, and added an AI assistant, retailing at $299. The new Oakley collaboration could either upgrade these specs or present the same technology in a sportier frame aimed at athletes and outdoor enthusiasts.

Since Oakley and Ray-Ban share ownership under EssilorLuxottica, this collaboration is a natural extension of Meta’s existing partnership with the eyewear giant. Bloomberg reported in January that the new glasses will be based on Oakley’s Sphaera model and might include a central camera, unlike the Ray-Ban Meta glasses where the camera sits on the frame edge.

What to Expect from the June 20 Launch

As the launch approaches, speculation grows about the glasses’ specific features. Key questions focus on possible improvements in audio, camera quality, and AI integration. Observers also wonder if these glasses will be optimized for sports and outdoor activities or general lifestyle use.

Ultimately, this collaboration highlights Meta’s broader goal to lead the next generation of wearable tech and digital experiences beyond smartphones and traditional screens. The partnership with Oakley shows Meta’s commitment to innovation in the evolving wearable market.
