UAE To Replace Emirates ID With Facial Recognition
The UAE is gearing up to launch a cutting-edge digital identification system, one that could eliminate the need for physical Emirates ID cards altogether. Within the next year, residents may only need facial recognition and biometric data to access essential services. This upcoming system marks a significant step in the country’s commitment to digital innovation and service efficiency.
The initiative is being spearheaded by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP). Authorities are working to expand the use of e-Emirates IDs, especially in sectors like healthcare, banking, hospitality, and telecommunications. These developments were discussed during a recent session of the Federal National Council (FNC).
Urgent Calls for Streamlined Identity Checks
FNC member Adnan Al Hammadi voiced concerns over the continued reliance on physical ID cards. Despite the country’s digital transformation, many services still require residents to present their physical Emirates ID. This has created barriers, particularly in urgent scenarios. For instance, patients must carry their cards to receive treatment, banks demand them for transactions, and hotels still require original ID for check-ins.
“There is an urgent need for fast, effective solutions to streamline identity verification in these essential sectors,” Al Hammadi stated during the council session. His remarks resonated with many residents who face similar frustrations. Clearly, the call for more efficient alternatives has gained momentum.
ICP’s Digital Expansion Plans
Responding to these concerns, Minister of State for Federal National Council Affairs, Abdul Rahman Al Owais, confirmed that many services have already adopted the e-Emirates ID. Nevertheless, he acknowledged that broader implementation is needed. Consequently, the ICP will focus on expanding the system’s use in the critical sectors raised by the FNC.
Although the exact launch timeline has not been disclosed, officials indicated that full deployment could occur within a year. If successful, the transition to facial recognition and digital IDs will reduce dependency on physical documents, simplify service access, and further strengthen the UAE’s position as a digital-first nation.
