Saudi Hospital Achieves World’s First Robotic Artificial Heart Implantation
King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSHRC) in Riyadh has made medical history by performing the world’s first robotic-assisted implantation of an artificial heart pump, HeartMate 3, developed by Abbott. This groundbreaking procedure represents a significant milestone in healthcare innovation and patient care.
The surgery was successfully performed on a 35-year-old patient suffering from advanced heart failure, accompanied by kidney and lung function deterioration. The patient, who had been hospitalized for 120 days, is now on the path to recovery with a dramatically reduced hospital stay and an anticipated discharge within just 10 days, compared to the 63-day average for conventional surgeries.
Led by Dr. Feras Khaliel, head of cardiac surgery and director of KFSHRC’s Robotics and Minimally Invasive Surgery Program, the procedure utilized robotic technology to ensure precision and safety. The patient experienced no infections or bleeding and was amazed at the minimal scarring.
