Styrofoam: A vice of the past in the New Abu Dhabi

Styrofoam products banned in Abu Dhabi

The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) announced a ban on styrofoam products starting June 1, 2024. This decision is part of EAD’s ‘single-use plastic policy,’ launched in 2020.

The ban targets single-use consumer products. This includes styrofoam cups, lids, plates, and beverage containers. Food containers for immediate consumption, either on the spot or for takeaway, are also banned. Additionally, it affects containers for ready-to-eat products that don’t need further preparation like cooking or heating.

However, there are some exemptions. Products not intended for single use, like large storage boxes and coolers, are exempt. Trays for meat, fruit, ready-made dairy products, and other retail food items are also exempt. Products designed for medical use are excluded from the ban as well.

Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, EAD secretary-general, explained the reason behind the ban. Styrofoam breaks easily into microplastics, which can enter the food chain. This poses risks to human health and biodiversity. “We selected only avoidable single-use plastics with sustainable alternatives,” Al Dhaheri said. EAD will support both government and private sector entities to shift towards reusable solutions.

This ban follows the success of Abu Dhabi’s single-use plastic policy. By April 2024, the policy had reduced the use of 310 million single-use plastic bags. Retailers distributed up to 95 per cent fewer plastic bags, cutting down over 2,000 tonnes of single-use plastic bags. Additionally, the policy helped collect over 1,000 tonnes of bottles, equal to 67 million bottles.
