SAFEEN Group trials first marine electric tug

SAFEEN Group, part of AD Ports Group, has started testing an electric tug, a first in the Middle East. They will use the electric tug at Khalifa Port, AD Ports Group’s main facility. SAFEEN Group introduced the Damen RSD-E Tug 2513 during the 27th International Tug & Salvage Convention in Dubai. This all-electric maritime harbour tug offers many benefits. It has zero emissions from ‘tank to propeller.’ Additionally, it has a 70-ton bollard pull, which can handle the largest vessels, and it’s cost-effective because it has lower maintenance costs compared to diesel tugs.

Initially, SAFEEN Group will operate the tug using generators that meet the latest IMO tier 3 emission regulations. Despite using generators, this method is still more fuel-efficient than traditional ASD tugs.

SAFEEN Group hopes this trial will lead to an electrification strategy for their marine services fleet. This plan includes creating a shore facility at Khalifa Port capable of delivering 1.5 MW of power for charging the tugs. With this facility, the tug can use its full electric potential, significantly reducing the maritime sector’s carbon footprint.

“Implementing electric tugs into our operations aligns with our local and global ambitions for greener maritime operations,” stated Captain Ammar Mubarak Al Shaiba, CEO of the maritime and shipping cluster at AD Ports Group.

The RSD-E 2513 has gained fame in the maritime industry after winning the ‘Tug of the Year’ award in 2022. This award highlights the vessel’s innovative design and its contribution to environmental sustainability.
