Google introduces “passkeys” for a simpler login experience

Google has recently introduced “passkeys” as a new and secure alternative to passwords for logging into its services. Passkeys are designed to provide a more straightforward and safe way for users to access their online accounts, and they work by allowing an online service such as Gmail to communicate directly with a trusted device to enable a user to log in.

Passkeys provide an added layer of security compared to traditional passwords and texted confirmation codes, as users never see them directly. Instead, a user’s identity is verified on their trusted device using a PIN unlock code, biometrics such as fingerprints or face scans, or a physical security dongle.

Google has designed its passkeys to work with a variety of devices, including iPhones, Macs, and Windows computers, as well as Google’s own Android phones. This means that users can use passkeys on all their devices and have a seamless and secure experience.

Password-based security systems have many issues that passkeys aim to address. Passwords are often easy to hack or steal, especially when users choose passwords that are easy to remember but also easy to guess. Stronger passwords are more secure, but they are harder to remember. Even password managers have a master password that needs protection.

Passkeys offer a safer alternative to traditional passwords, and they have an additional advantage over passwords in that they are specific to particular websites. This means that even if a user’s passkey is stolen from one site, scammers cannot use it to access their other accounts.

To enable passkeys for their Google account, users can simply open their browser on any trusted phone or computer and sign in to their Google account. They can then visit the page g.co/passkeys and click on the option to “start using passkeys.” If using an Apple device, users will need to set up the Keychain app first, which securely stores passwords and now passkeys as well.

Next, users can create their passkeys on the same Google account page by clicking on the “Create a passkey” button. They can create passkeys on their current device or on another device. If creating a passkey on a PC that cannot generate a passkey, a QR code will appear that users can scan with their phone’s camera to set up the passkey.

In summary, passkeys provide a secure and easy-to-use alternative to traditional passwords, and they offer an added layer of protection against security breaches.
