Twitter’s ‘For You’ feed to prioritize verified accounts

Twitter’s CEO Elon Musk announced on Monday that the platform’s default “For You” feed will only recommend content from verified accounts starting from April 15. This move is aimed at preventing advanced AI bot swarms from taking over the platform. Musk also stated that verification will be required for voting in polls on the platform for the same reason.

Verified accounts cost $8 per month for web users and $11 per month for Android, iPhone, and iPad users, and subscribers get access to several features such as fewer advertisements, longer videos, and more prominently featured content. Musk has been trying to increase the platform’s revenue by pushing more users to pay for a premium subscription since his acquisition of Twitter for $44 billion in October.

Additionally, Twitter is planning to introduce a payments feature, which aligns with Musk’s plans to tap into new revenue streams. However, Twitter’s revenue and adjusted earnings decreased by 40% on an annual basis in December 2022 due to several advertisers withdrawing after Musk took charge of the company. In the second quarter of 2022, Twitter swung to a net loss of over $270 million compared to a net income of $65.6 million in the same period the previous year.
