ChatGPT: The game-changer in cybersecurity

ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence chatbot created by OpenAI that is generating a lot of buzz in the tech world. ChatGPT uses natural language processing to generate human-like text based on prompts entered by users. The application has a variety of potential uses, from summarizing research papers to assisting with creating a recipe with limited ingredients.

However, as with many technological advancements, ChatGPT and the AI behind it have already been targeted by cyber attackers. Research shows that attackers can misuse chatbot systems like ChatGPT to create convincing phishing emails and codes, leveraging the chatbot’s natural language processing capabilities to create well-written messages that are difficult to identify. With the ability to create phishing emails at a scale that is flawless from a language perspective, cyber attackers can launch highly effective phishing campaigns that are challenging to detect.

This is a serious concern given that phishing attacks are already a major threat. In surveys conducted in August 2022, 21 per cent of surveyed employees in the UAE and 19 per cent in KSA reported falling victim to stolen online credentials in the past year. As attackers increasingly incorporate AI into their phishing campaigns, the need for vigilance in identifying and responding to these attacks will become more important than ever.
