Meta attributes the Instagram outage to a technical issue

Instagram, the popular photo-sharing app owned by Meta (formerly Facebook), issued an apology following a widespread outage that affected thousands of users worldwide on Monday morning. The company attributed the disruption to a technical issue.

The problems with Instagram began at 1:51 am Gulf Standard Time, and during the peak of the outage, over 185,000 users reported being unable to access the platform, according to Downdetector, a site that tracks online service outages. Fortunately, the issues were resolved approximately two hours later.

In a statement on Twitter, Instagram acknowledged the outage and expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to users. A Meta official confirmed that the disruption was caused by a technical issue and assured that it was resolved as quickly as possible.

This is not the first time Instagram has experienced a major disruption. In October of the previous year, the platform encountered a similar issue, which was later attributed to a “bug” that was promptly fixed.

Amidst these challenges, Instagram is reportedly working on expanding its offerings. According to Bloomberg, the company is developing a text-based app to compete with Twitter. The project is currently in the testing phase, with celebrities and influencers participating, and it could potentially be launched as early as June. Furthermore, there are reports of Instagram preparing to introduce a rival product to Twitter later this summer.

With over two billion monthly users, Instagram remains a significant player in the social media landscape, and the company is striving to enhance its services and compete with other popular platforms in the ever-evolving digital space.
