Amazon declares resolution of service interruption and full restoration of operations

Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud-computing division of Amazon, has announced the resolution of a service problem that caused disruptions for several companies and organizations, including Southwest Airlines and New York’s transit agency.

After investigating increased error rates and latencies in one of its data centre clusters in the US-East-1 region, AWS reported that the issue has been resolved. The US-East-1 region, located in northern Virginia, is a critical hub for Amazon’s data centres.

As the world’s largest provider of on-demand computing power and software services, AWS disruptions can have widespread effects across the internet, impacting various industries and companies. The outage caused problems such as the inability to update websites, difficulty accessing the AWS console, and the unavailability of train service information on the website and app of New York’s transit agency.

One affected company, Craft Docs, a Hungary-based document collaboration startup, experienced a temporary outage of its web app and shared documents during the disruption. However, users of smartphone applications still had access to the software.

The service interruption with AWS’s Lambda service, which activates computing power in response to events, affected numerous other AWS services as well.

According to AWS’s status page, the issue has now been resolved, marking the most significant disruption since a December 2021 incident that affected websites, Roomba vacuums, and Amazon’s own delivery network software.
